Solid Waste Management Department envisions a clean and healthy city of Monrovia where waste
generated responsibly are collected, processed and disposed in a sustainable and healthy
manner, enhancing the quality of life of the people.
The Solid Waste Management Department takes lead in ensuring sustainable management of solid
waste in the city of Monrovia. It promotes and safeguards the public health of the through
street cleaning; collection, transfer, processing of garbage; promotion of waste reduction,
reuse and recycling of solid waste and safe composting and disposal of solid waste and other
substances that causes environmental nuisances and health hazards.
The Department is guided by and acts under the power vested by
Functions of the Department
To ensure that solid waste are timely collected through an effectively managed
primary waste
collection system processes.
To ensure that solid waste collected are transferred to appropriate sites for
processing and
disposal by managing an effective and efficient secondary waste collection system
which
includes operations for transfer and transfer stations management.
To ensure that the solid wastes are effectively processed (sorting, composting,
incineration
etc.).
To ensure that the solid waste are disposed properly through effective management of
dumpsites.
In collaboration with the community service department ensure /community awareness
with
regards to solid waste management.
Structure of the Department
To ensure that the above functions and responsibilities are delivered, three key
sections
are constituted under the solid Waste Management Department.
The three sections are:
- Primary waste collection section
- Secondary waste collection Section.
- Waste processing and Disposal Section.
